What the hell is the point of internal citations (MLA style)!?

WHY do we have to cite things internally when using MLA citation? All it does it make writing a paper more damn difficult than it already is. If we cite the sources at the end? why must we do so after every borrowed fact? It's so tedious and takes FOREVER!
