What should i look for in a pond?

i am doing a science project and i am in the eighth grade. for my project i am looking into a pond water sample through a microscope. i live in Illinois, palatine. Can anyone please tell me what i am supposed to be looking for? i have a pitcher and i see very small specks swimming around in the pitcher.
