Get an instruction manual- it tells you how to do it. Yes you keep them leashed during the training process. It works fine for some dogs, but not for others with a high prey drive. Don't leave them out there unsupervised for longer than it takes them to do business- it is not a babysitter and will not keep other animals from coming into your yard and if your dog has a high prey drive it will be off, shock or not.
